Shake Your Way to the Waistline You Want

Weight loss success

(Case Study)

A female client, 27 years of age, presented for help with weight loss. She revealed that she had been overweight for most of her life, from about age 7. Being overweight had affected her self-esteem and left her feeling like she wasn't 'good enough'. These negative belief patterns and the added physical burden of being overweight had restricted her from participating in and enjoying many activities. Her weight issues were largely due to over-eating (i.e. poor appetite control), poor food choices (i.e. increased intake of high carbohydrate, sugary foods), and lack of exercise. She had previously tried a number of different weight loss diets, but had always regained any weight lost. To help her lose weight, and keep it off this time, it was recommended that she try the Shake It Professional Weight Management Programme. Inflammation and stress issues also had to be address as these factors may affect weight loss.

Week 1 – 1st Visit

Dietary Changes: She was recommended to follow the Shake It eating plan (see below) and to increase her daily consumption of water.

Lifestyle Recommendations: Regular moderate exercise (i.e. walking, swimming, bike ride, etc.), 30 to 40 minutes three to four times per week.

Supplements Prescribed: She was also recommended the following supplements and meal replacements. (See Table below).

Other: To maximise compliance and motivation, the patient saw her Practitioner every week for a short consultation and had a Body composition test test done every second visit.

Results – Week 9

After 8 full weeks on Shake It, the patient lost more than 12 cm off her waist, indicating she had lost much of the dangerous visceral adipose tissue she was carrying (See before and after photos). She also lost 10.7 kgs of fat whilst maintaining her lean muscle mass (See body composition test results below). She said that her body composition test results were extremely motivating, and that the amazing results she has experienced far exceeded her expectations. She is fitter, healthier and can now enjoy activities that she never could before. She also has more confidence in herself and feels extremely excited that she may now go shopping and buy clothes off the rack. She also expressed enthusiasm for the understanding she gained regarding how best to eat in the long-term to suit her body. The nutritional knowledge she gained through this programme is information she is now able to pass on to her own family. She has found that her weight loss has motivated not only her friends and colleagues, but a large number of her community, which is a very powerful message to be able to pass on to people considering making these changes.

There are many factors that may contribute to someone gaining/regaining weight and poor appetite control and/or dysregulated satiety signalling (feeling of fullness) is one of the most common reasons why we see this in our centre. Research has shown that people can modulate food intake by voluntary control in the short-term, however almost invariably weight regain returns in the long-term if underlying factors affecting appetite and fat metabolism are not addressed. It is suggested that feelings of hunger and satiety (felling of fullness) may be of more importance than voluntary control of food intake when it comes to supporting weight loss both in the short and long-term.

To help have better regulated appetite and satiety signals, and therefore lose weight more easily, higher protein, low-carbohydrate diets have been shown to be more effective. It is well established that, for the same energy intake, protein is more satiating than carbohydrate – especially high glycaemic load carbohydrate. A carbohydrate controlled programme like the Shake It Professional Weight Management Programme will, therefore, help reset appetite and satiety signalling, helping their weight loss journey become easier. Education about long-term eating plans to suit individuals needs is also vital to help them stay healthy. If you or someone you know might benefit from weight loss, consider the Shake It Professional Weight Management Programme to help reset their appetites and get them leaner, healthier and fitter today!
